| Description The Taipei Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1969 under the direction of Chang-Kuo Teng, who was succeeded by Tun-Chu Chen in 1973. In 1986, the Orchestra appointed iFelix Chiu-Sen Chen as the music director . Under Chen's masterful leadership, the Orchestra has grown in size and strength, the number of orchestra members increased, and the length of the season expanded. He has also broadened the Orchestra's repertoire by introducing new and unfamiliar works from all music styles and periods, while maintaining the highest standard of traditional classical music. In the season of 2004, the Taipei City Government nominated the well-known bassoonist, Chia-Chu Hsu as the General Director. The Taipei Symphony Orchestra has received high acclaim with successful and outstanding opera productions,such as La Traviata, Faust, Carmen, Turnadot, La Boheme, Aida, Madame Butterfly, I Pagliacci, Othello, Cavalleria Rusticana, Rigoletto, and The Flying Dutchman. While traditional opera was being presented, twentieth century works were also introduced and popularized. Most recently, the Orchestra gave the Taiwan premiere of The Gate, a multi-media composition by Tan Dun. The Taipei Symphony Orchestra has become an active participant in the international musical arena, performed at festivals in the USA and France, toured Russia, Spain, Austria, China. The Taipei Symphony Orchestra promotes musical education throughout the island and is involved in community service through outreach programs. |
